Speed,
control, endurance, rudiments …
Time, groove, pocket …
Wrist vs. finger control, Moeller technique, traditional or matched
grip …
‘Comping’, polyrhythms, ghost notes, linear drumming …
There's
a lot to learn and a lot to master when it comes to playing drums well.
And without some sort of guidance, it can be a formidable task to
figure out what to embrace and what to avoid.
No
matter where you are on your musical journey, there's no better way to
move forward than to strengthen your foundation. An important
difference between the top players and the "also rans" is this
foundation. Establishing a strong rhythmic and musical foundation can
be a challenge, and while technique is all very nice --
necessary,
in fact -- laying down a solid groove will get you a lot further a lot
faster than any other musical attribute.
A
good teacher, one with both playing and teaching experience in all
kinds of situations, can help you sort out the many things that are
competing for your attention and help you to unlock your drumming and
musical potential.
As one
of my students summed up my methods: "This stuff really works!"
