Teaching
Philosophy
I
have studied with some exceptional teachers – not all of them drummers.
I have also studied psychology, education, and learning theory, and I
believe that a teacher must thoroughly understand learning in order to
be an effective teacher.
I
strive to understand the needs and learning styles of my students and
to then create an environment in which learning is not only possible
but inevitable. Although my training is mainly in jazz, my
approach is not just for jazz. All contemporary music has an element of
groove; jazz does not have a monopoly there. You will find swinging
drummers in ever genre: rock, funk, country, metal … you name it.
With
more than 40 years of teaching experience in a wide variety of settings
and 14 years as a professional musician, I think I bring unique wisdom
and insight to the drum studio. My approach may not be ‘impressive’,
but then impressive rarely makes for good music.
